  • Telephone Hotline: Staffed by trained counselors 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you are a lawyer or judge and have a personal problem that is causing you significant concern, the Lawyer Assistance Program can help. Please feel free to call LAP's confidential hotline at 800-327-9631.
  • Personal Counseling: Members are entitled to six prepaid clinical sessions per calendar year.
  • Work/Life Program for assistance with such issues as childcare, elder care and finances. Callers receive advice, referrals and materials customized to take into account their individual concerns, financial and geographic needs. These referrals are reached through calling the LAP Hotline: 800-327-9631.

Calling the LAP Hotline

Here is what happens when you call the LAP Hotline at 800-327-9631:

  1. Your call will be answered 24/7 by a trained counselor who will ask for your information, but you are not required to provide it. Any information you provide is kept strictly confidential.
  2. You will then be able to explain your need to the counselor, who will then refer you to professional counselors in an area convenient for you. If you call after hours, you will receive a call back within 24 hours with referrals.
  3. If you decide that you aren’t connecting as well as you’d like with your counselor, you can call the LAP Hotline again and be referred to another professional. The goal is for you to find someone with whom you feel comfortable.

ABA Well-Being Pledge

The ABA has created a pledge calling upon legal employers (including law firms, corporate entities, government agencies and legal aid organizations) to first: (a) recognize that substance use and mental health problems represent a significant challenge for the legal profession and acknowledge that more can and should be done to improve the health and well-being of lawyers; and, (b) pledge to support the Campaign and work to adopt and prioritize its seven-point framework for building a better future.

Note: The Lawyer Assistance Program is a service offered to Bar members and is not available to the general public. It is also not a Lawyer Referral Service. For help in finding an attorney, please contact your local bar association.
